Prevention of Miscarriage

The rate of miscarriage after the transfer of eggs through IVF procedure for the female patients around 40 years old is nearly 50%.

Habitual miscarriages and spontaneous abortions in the first 3 months of pregnancies are usually caused by the condition of mother such as ovum, uterus and cervix.  The chromosomal or structural abnormality of the fetus can also be affected by the conditions of mother.

This is also one area TCM can be beneficial in preventing the miscarriages and supporting the healthy growth of the baby in the womb.  The best prevention of miscarriage can be achieved by having a well planned pregnancy at least 6 months from the last episode of miscarriage.

TCM can help optimize the condition of the mother by improving the pre-existing problems and recommending a proper diet and lifestyle.

Obese or over-weight mothers have about a 24% increased chance of delivering a baby prematurely, which is the most common cause of illness and death of babies in the first 28 days of life. (McMaster University Research, 2010)

The most common pathological factors, before the pregnancy, that can lead to increased chances of miscarriages in terms of TCM diagnosis are:

  • Qi and Blood deficiency : chronic fatigue, weak constitution, under-weight chronic digestive problems, insomnia

  • Kidney deficiency : chronic pain or weakness of lower back, dizziness

  • Heat or toxicity in blood : history of smoking, alcohols, drugs

  • Emotional restlessness, heavy or crampy periods

  • Dampness / phlegm: over-weight, vaginal discharges, swelling of limbs, feeling of heaviness
